Come dine with me…
There are few greater pleasures in my life than gathering friends and family around our table – we sit for hours talking and laughing!
Curating our dining chair collection has been a personal pleasure.
In my experience, there are a few things to consider when it comes to choosing your perfect dining seating…
Leg space requirements
There is nothing worse that guests having to fit their legs under a table that’s too low or sat on a chair that’s too high.
Check the height of your table and take into consideration any wood/fixings underneath that may protrude.
A brief rule of thumb would be to allow around 30cm between your legs and the table.
We are a very tall family so you may require less (or more!).
Table scaping
* the activity of arranging items on a table in an attractive and decorative way, often with matching plates, bowls, etc. and items such as napkins, flowers, and candles: *
Also known as my most favourite pastime!
Minimal dinner settings will allow you to space your chairs (and your guests!) a little closer together.
If you’re someone who loves a side plate (you are amongst friends here!) then you may wish to leave a slightly larger gap between your place settings.
I’d recommend leaving about 65cm between each place setting as a minimum.
Primary function
Taking a little time to realistically think about what you require from your dining seating will hopefully ensure you receive maximum joy from it.
Dan and I have fallen into the trap of choosing the most gorgeous armchairs for our previous space which looked absolutely fabulous- and collected every single falling crumb from our tiny boys fingers…
We quickly replaced them with chairs without sides!
If your dining chairs are to be used occasionally, you may wish to forgo such considerations and I’ll confess, my favourite pastime is to choose style over functionality historically!
Dining chair personality
Our homes are the perfect stage to allow our personalities to shine – and what better stage than a Sunday lunch or a long-lasting dinner party.
You may be looking to pack a punch with your chair choice and really lift your space with a bold colour or a modern shape.
Or you may be looking for the last piece in your design jigsaw puzzle that requires a subtle elegance that comes from peerless design.
You may have the luxury of being able to make both options work or better still, combine the two!
However you intend to style your space I wish you joy on your journey to finding your perfect pieces.
Lots of love
